When there took place the discussion about violence in the city of Marseille on Oct. 16, 2013, one key term was repeatedly used to describe the newly created situation as a result of Marseille having become European Capital of Culture in 2013 and therefore having heavily invested in a certain kind of culture. It was called in its huge discrepancy between the Southern and Northern part of the city a 'culture of discrimination' with the division line being drawn by those who cannot afford to pay for a plate 49 Euros.
By having a famous cook make his mark, it reflects a certain interpretation of culture linked to the 'cuisine' for which France is famous for, but with the trend due to austerity being clearly in the direction of ever more people going to fast food joints as they cannot afford to sit down and eat in an expensive restaurant.
