70 years from the Holocaust of the Jews of Ioannina
There took place from 24-30 March 2014 a remembrance of the Holocaust which took the lives of 1900 Jews who had lived till then in peace with others in Ioannina. The commeration was supported by the British Embassy and the Embassy of Canada as well as done in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Beligum, the Austrian, the Hungarian and German Embassies, all in Athens. The key organiser was the Cultural Center of Ioannina while co-organisers were the Region of Epirus, University of Ioannina, Institute of Joseph and Esther Ganis and the Education Regional Directorate of Epirus. Support was given as well by the Jewish Museum of Greece and the Israeli Embassy in Athens.
The official opening took place at the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Ioannina with a Photographic Exhibition with photos being shown to following themes:
- Photos of the time when the arrests were made in the Jewish Community (March 1944)
- Photos of the Greek Jews who fought alongside the Greek Resistance
There was also shown an exhibition entitled "The Jewish Community of Ioannina: A Journey in time"
done in collaboration with the Jewish Museum of Greece.
At the same time, there were held lectures and a film shown on "Aspects of Ioannina during the War Period" with following speakers:
- A. Raptis, Historian, "The destruction of the Jewish Community by the Nazis on March 25th, 1944"
- E. Kourmatzi, Prof. of the University of Ioannina,on "Ioannina: a Multicultural Society".
