FOR

IOANNINA-EPIRUS 2021 CANDIDACY

"In a crowded hall, among an enthusiastic audience, the Mayor of Ioannina Thomas Begas, made the official announcement of the candidacy Ioannina-Epirus European Cultural Capital 2021, revealing the brand identity and concept for the cultural program.

In the midst of a highly critical situation for Greece, the Mayor, the Artistic Director, Niketi Kontouri, and the Bid Committee decided to proceed with the event as planned in an act of high symbolic value, sending a message of hope and confidence in the European future of Greece.

Titled «Here and Beyond» the cultural program of Ioannina-Epirus 2021 aspires to convey a super-regional, European dimension and radiance.

This initiative has brought together in a joint effort the entire region of Epirus, all the regional and local authorities, universities, chambers of commerce, institutions, personalities from all areas of intellectual and social life and Epirotes of the diaspora, while a decisive role remains for the volunteers."

Past, Present and future - Going beyond what is "here"

Ioannina listens to the discourse between Culture and Science, utilises the innate contrasts of the city and creates an ideal environment for networking, innovation and education that enables talent, intelligence and vision to bloom and bear fruit."

"Titled Here and Beyond – Going beyond what is “here”, the concept for Ioannina-Epirus 2021 is an exhortation to think, to act, to live “beyond” what is well-trodden.

Beyond what is known, familiar, obvious.

The concept of Here and Beyond – Going beyond what is “here” invites us to explore the literal and metaphorical sense of one’s land and its connection to the world and then transcend it.

Furthermore, it calls on us to overcome whatever restricts our potential: physical limits, ourselves, our fears, the conditions under which we live, what we take for granted, tradition, the establishment, borders, the natural world."
