Communiqué - 26.03.2014

Ravenna candidate city for the European Capital of Culture 2019 commissions KEA to advise on a

culture and creative industry strategy.

Ravenna (population 160.000) in the Emilia Romagna region is the former capital of the Roman empire (5th

Century). As a UNESCO World Heritage city (with 8 sites), Ravenna embodies the cultural richness and

quality of life of European cities. The city is counting on culture, art and its creative entrepreneurs to

contribute towards building a socially and economically attractive city.

Ravenna is confronted with the traditional challenges of mid-sized towns in Europe in a fast changing

world.

KEA has been asked to advise the authorities on ways to nurture the emergence of new economic

activities by preparing a strategy paper as well as to help organise an international event that will consider

the role of culture and creative industries in local development and innovation.

This follows KEA’s work for European cities such as Lille, Nantes, Birmingham, Bologna, Mons, Barcelona

and Amsterdam.

KEA is a Brussels-based strategic consultancy and research center providing advice, support and research in relation to creative

industries, cultural, entertainment, media and sport sectors.
