Cities short-listed

The cities which were short-listed had all different and unique qualities. At the same time, there were some surprises as to which ones were left out e.g. Palermo. Further studies are needed to understand the particular Italian situation but for sure there are so many cities which can convey beauty, history, modernity and above all a new vitality.

The previous Italian cities were Florence (1986) Bologna (2000) and Genoa (2004) might have something to do with what new geographical balance was struck. After all originally there were 21 cities seeking the title.

Six Italian cities named finalists for the prestigious title

Each year the title for European Capital of Culture (designated by the European Union) goes to a city that exhibits the riches and diversity of European Culture. The European Capital of Culture 2019 Jury made the announcement on Friday, November 15th, before submitting its list to the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and for Tourism (MIBACT). The Jury will reconvene in just nine months to evaluate the finalists' programme of events.

"The choice," President of the Jury Steve Green emphasized, "was made unanimously, based on explicit criteria, including the individual cities' studies on interpreting the future of culture."
For the candidates chosen for the short list (the greater part of them UNESCO World Heritage Sites), "such a nomination alone can result in significant cultural, economic and social benefits, provided that their bid is part of a longer-term culture-led development strategy," imparted European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, Androulla Vassiliou.
