Pireaus 2021
Port of Pireaus
On 24.2.2014 The Shipping Herald, The Maritime Portal brought an article drawing attention to
Piraeus and prospects for 2021
It states that 2021 coincides with a historical date since 2.500 years ago there took place the Battle of Salamis. This idea was advanced especially by Spyros Mercouris, the brother of Melina and first coordinator of a European Capital of Culture when Athens started this project in 1985.
The aim is to link the application for the title with a wish to celebrate this 2 500 year anniversary in Piraeus.
In the opinon of the Shipping Herald, there is no doubt that "in 2021 Piraeus and Salamis will be the European Capital of Culture."
There are some definite plans in place already:
- the regeneration and creation of a Cultural Coast with 180.000 m2 of open spaces, three museums and theme parks.
- In 2015 the European Maritime Day will be celebrated in Piraeus, organized by the General Assembly of ESPO.
A positive impact is expected to be the region's development and in particular that of the cruise sector. Already "active concessions and amendments exceed 1 billion Euros invesment, private invesments of 300 million Euros through private funds, and already the railway linking of the new commercial port with the national and European rail network has been completed."
The hope is that the concept of “Ports as engines for growth” shall be beneficial for the Greek economy and the Greek port system and therefore be a growth engine for shipping, sea transportation, cruise, total port industry in Europe, the Mediterranean and Greece.
