What impact had the bid upon the theatre scene in Lublin
When making a bid, many cultural resources are literally 'mobilised'. At the same time, a city attempts to ensure these resources are really available and capable of fulfilling a special demand made upon a city once it has obtained the designation to be European Capital of Culture for one year. Naturally activities which shall continue anyhow, that is regardless whether or not the bid has been successful, tend to shrug off the fact that Wroclaw with another theatrical tradition got the designation for 2016 and not Lublin.
Interestingly enough Lublin strived to confront the Russian tradition of making theatre with other theatrical forms practiced more in Western Europe. As if the 'cold war' had still to be overcome on stage, it does link to the conference which was held at Toronto University in Nov. 2009 under the title 'Europe performing' to trace exactly the impact the fall of the Berlin Wall and with it the collapse of Communist regimes had on theatre in Eastern Europe and therefore on the theatrical world in Poland.
There was made an annoucement about the "Konfrontacje Teatralne" International Festival held on 8th of October 2010:
"This year’s edition in its international part is a continuation of fascinating explorations of the Russian theatre.
We will see, among others, the winner of this year’s Moscow Golden Mask Festival, RAMT Theatre, Playwright and Director Centre, Moscow or the Nikolay Kolyada Theatre. And as if that wasn’t enough, Dogstar Theatre Company, awarded at Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, will perform its last production. The presence of theatres from the USA and Great Britain is a hint of the direction the festival is taking from next year on. It will confront the Russian theatre tradition with other strong theatre cultures from Europe and the rest of the world. What is new this year is a special presentation of Lublin theatres. For two festival days it will be possible to see almost all artists working in Lublin. The events that will accompany the festival include: meetings with artists, presentations of future projects in the festival club, concerts and a review of the most interesting Russian films of the last two seasons."

Of interest is whether or not this confrontation on stage has continued and what outcomes have these theatrical performances in terms of directing, actors performing, stage design, lightening and participation by the audiences as reflected in theatrical reviews and studies undertaken by playwrights and students of theatre?
